TOWER RECEPTIONS: MISSION 45

 

Outbound to the target, 125 miles North of Foggia (zone-2):

 

    Buckeye 3, Adolph's Nightmare, suddenly leaves the high squadron and makes a shallow dive to the West.  It disappears far behind the rest of the group continuing on to Steyr . . .


Over Steyr, Austria (zone-6):

 

    “This is Cowboy Four . . . This is Cowboy Four . . . Got hi . . .” <static follows>

    Just before the 317th Squadron reaches the ball bearing plant at Steyr, Austria, Divine Wind takes a direct hit on the port wing from flak.  The bombers in the group see the plane in a funeral glide and three chutes pop out as the plane falls down to earth.

    “Joker Three to Joker One, Joker Three to Joker One . . . This flak is terrible, can't we go around it, Joker Thr. . . KA-BANG!!! . . .”

    “OH SH!T, OH SH . . . ”

    “JOKER ONE . . . JOKER ONE . . . WE JUST LOST THE FRONT OF THE SEVEN,  IT JUST BLEW UP RIGHT IN FRONT OF US, I THINK GRAMS AND RADFORDSON ARE DEAD.  CAN'T KEEP UP SPEED,  SHE'S SLUGGISH,  I'M DROPPING OUT, I'M DROPPING OUT . . .”

    “GOD HELP US, JOKER ONE . . .”


On approach to Sterparone Field (zone-1):

 

    “Buckeye Two to base!  Buckeye Two to base!  We have casualties, and left main wheel will not go down!  Request crash crew and medical teams be ready.”


Over Sterparone Field (zone-1):

 

    “Easy Does It to control tower, be advised of our situation.  We have port landing gear out, and a full load of bombs that we could not drop.   Repeat, we have port landing gear out and a full load of bombs, over.”
