DEBRIEFING ROOM SOMEWHERE IN SOUTHERN ITALY - (submitted by Jim Pink, 316th Sqn)
“Yes, Sir, you wouldn't believe it. This German fighter, a . . . a, Bobby what was that Kraut that hit the B-17? Oh, ya, a Focke-Wulf 190. Well, this crazy Kraut pushed into the flak box and came screaming down past us but missed shooting our plane. So it went down to one of the 88th's squadrons who was flying just below us today. Anyway see, this Kraut must have been upset at missing us and pressed hard on the last plane in their high squadron. Well it looked as if the 88th boys got that Kraut as it started smoking bad. Then the flak opened up. One shell hit this crazy krauts plane just as it was about to turn out of its attack. That's when it happened. This Kraut veered back into the tail of that poor B-17. It exploded into that B-17s tail just like a flak shell.
Those poor boys didn't have a chance.”
“I can't remember, but I think we saw about four chutes, Sir . . . What, Bobby . . . Oh, that's right, it was five chutes, Sir. Boy what a nasty way to buy it . . . Think you chassed of the Kraut and he hits you . . . that stinks! . . . Sir.”
