For those who missed the announcement Mission 14 to Florence is due in 3 days on the 15th, 1900 Pacific time.

So far, 10 of the 24 planes assigned reported in.  It's been a tough 4-zone mission with 2 planes failing to return and 1 other one was written off as scrap and spare parts.

MILK-RUNS:

bullet

There are several Milk-run missions planned for this campaign.

bullet

These missions do count towards reaching a crewman's 50-mission tour goal and for the awarding of lucky charms.

bullet

But since there are no AARs to submit, promotion points are not awarded.

bullet

There will be only 3 squadrons assigned, with one squadron standing down (the one squadron who would have been stood down in an every-4th day stand down rotation).

bullet

I have planned it out that all squadrons will fly the same number of Milk-Runs missions during the course of this campaign, so no one squadron will benefit by flying more or be at a disadvantage by flying less than another squadron.

bullet

Bomb run % are optional.  If players wish to roll for their own results, they may submit a score. If a player doesn't care, I will roll for them.

PROMOTIONS:

A few players have written about promotions. This is one area where I need the help most from the Squadron COs. I would like the squadron COs to submit their recommendations of their squadrons for promotions to me. So, please ask your squadron CO first.

Promotions Q & A:

1). What happens to my co-pilot when he has enough points, does he become a captain too?

Nope.  If a co-pilot ever expects to make captain, either he gets his own command (plane) or the commanding pilot either leaves (KIA, WIA, or reaches 50 missions) creating a vacancy.

2). Can there be two captains on the plane? Or does he get promoted/moved to another position.

Yes, you can have the Pilot, Bombardier & Navigator as Captains but not the co-pilot too.

3). I guess I'm asking if a higher ranking guy can exist if not the pilot...?

Yes, there might be a situation where the pilot is a 2nd Lt. while either or both the bombardier & navigator could be a higher rank, like a captain or 1st Lt. This might happen if the pilot is KIA and the co-pilot who is still a 2nd Lt. becomes the first pilot, while the two guys in the nose could have enough points to be 1st LTs. or captains.

MEDALS:
Medal for bravery should go through the squadron 'chain-of-command'. This is where I also need help from the squadron COs for any recommendations.

I'm behind in awarding medals right now. The 'slam-dunk', automatically approved medals that don't need a squadron CO's approval are: Purple Hearts, POWs, bombing runs of 90-to-100%, and a non-pilot crew member landing a plane while trying to save seriously wounded men.

The revised expected schedule for upcoming missions 14, 15 & 16:

Mission 14: 12 days, due Feb. 15th   399th (Lead), 318th (High), 317th (Low), 316th (SD)

Mission 15: 12 days, due Feb. 27th   318th (Lead), 316th (High), 399th (Low), 317th (SD)

Mission 16: 12 days, due Mar. 11th   316th (Lead), 317th (High), 318th (Low), 399th (SD)

Well, that is all. I hope everyone is having fun. If you have suggestions on what I could do to improve the campaign or group
site, let me know. Thanks.

3 February 2005

Thirteenth & Fourteenth missions posted.  Mission 13 was a 'Milk-Run' and players were instructed to proceed to Mission 14.

The deadline is Tuesday, 15 February at 1900 (Pacific); UK, Scotland & France +8 (0300, 16 Feb), Denmark & Sweden +9 (0400, 16 Feb), & South Africa +10 (0500, 16 Feb).

22 January 2005

Twelfth mission posted.

Player news: Paul Sommer dropped out for personal reasons, George Martin is still on leave status, Edward Githens missed mission 11 without a word (his first miss), and unless there was a good reason to reinstate him, Mark Hanna is an involuntary drop for missing his last two missions without a word.

Made a major change to the flying schedule: If a player fails to submit the AAR for the current mission, and provided the player hasn't been dropped from the game, that player will not be be assigned to fly the next mission.

Made minor change to awarding of promotion points - no points are awarded if a player's AAR is late; that is, it is submitted after the posted deadline but before the next mission is posted.

The expected schedule for upcoming missions 13, 14 & 15:

Mission 13: 11 days, due Feb. 12th   317th (Lead), 399th (High), 316th (Low), 318th (SD)

Mission 14: 12 days, due Feb. 24th   399th (Lead), 318th (High), 317th (Low), 316th (SD)

Mission 15: 12 days, due Mar. 8th     318th (Lead), 316th (High), 399th (Low), 317th (SD)

The 316th is scheduled to be stood down.  Only Haygood (Old Yard Dog) and myself (Full House) are standing down.  Hamel, Munday, Daves & Sommer are scheduled to fly.

Future plans:

I only received a few feedback for the upcoming holiday time periods.

What feedback I did received was people liked the faster pace of this campaign.

The choices were to continue as we are with individual players informing me they need to take off if they had other family/work commitments, take an extra week to complete a mission during the Thanksgiving (US & Canada) and Christmas/New Years time periods, or to take those holiday periods off.

I am looking at doing the following schedule:

Mission 6: Nov. 12-to-21 (10 days)
Mission 7: Nov. 22-to-Dec. 10 (19 days) - Scheduled stand down 317th (Moody & O'Connor)
Mission 8: Dec. 11-to-20 (10 days) - Scheduled stand down 399th (Martin & Cox)
Mission 9: Dec. 21-to-Jan. 9 (20 days) - Scheduled stand down 318th (Webster & Zaragoza)

If you are scheduled to stand down but want to fly instead, let me know.

Any thoughts out there?

After each player finishes his mission 5 (or now if you already know the your decision), send me a message on your thoughts on continuing this accelerated pace (10-12 days per mission).  When mission 5 is over on Nov. 11th, we would have flown in 8 weeks what on the average it took the other groups to do in 5 months (1 mission per month).

The pros: It keeps the players interested and active.  You don't have all this inactive time between mission.

bullet

The cons: You don't have the luxury to put off the mission to do 'real life' stuff (wives, kids, work, etc).

The Christmas/New Year holidays are coming up, plus that North American one, Thanksgiving.

I am thinking of having mission during these months but with longer deadlines to include the holidays for family obligation purposes.   Any thoughts out there?  So, instead of a 10-day or 12-day deadline, missions during those times will probably be a week longer.  Sort of a compromise for the players who want to keep going instead of shutting down the group during these weeks.

If you know that you absolutely cannot commit to flying in the next two months, let me know, and I won't slot you into a mission.

23 October 2004

Added our 24th players, Bernard Godfrey to the 399th.  At this time, the optional 4-squadron stand down rotation rule comes into play.  Beginning mission 5, one squadron will be eligible to be stood down.  In advance before knowing the mission, players wishing to sit out the mission may do so.  Players wanting to fly, will be assigned in the formation chart.  Planes belonging to the squadron assigned to stand down will be intermixed with the other formations as decided by the Ops officer.

Eight players (out of 23) have reported in for the Rimini mission.

21 October 2004

Added our 22nd & 23rd players, Mark Hanna & Lee Van Camp to the 399th.

Fourth mission posted.

Deadline is Saturday, 30 October at 1900 (Pacific); UK +8 (0300, 31 Oct), Denmark & Sweden +9 (0400, 31 Oct), & South Africa +10 (0500, 31 Oct).

13 October 2004

I'll be out of town and out of e-mail contact until very late Sunday night (US Pacific time zone) or early Monday morning for our overseas friends.  So, there will be no updates to the web site until I return, perhaps until Monday evening (early Tuesday overseas).

I recently added our 21st player, Steve Williams.  Steve will be the flying in the 8th slot in the lead squadron for Mission 3.

9 October 2004

Third mission posted.

Deadline is Wednesday, 20 October at 1900 (Pacific); UK +8 (0300, 21 Oct), Denmark & Sweden +9 (0400, 21 Oct), & South Africa +10 (0500, 21 Oct).

4 October 2004

Added our 19th player, Jeff O'Handley, to the 318th squadron.  Jeff will fly his first mission on mission 3.

Mission 3 should be posted by Sunday, October 10th, with a due date of Thursday, October 21st (12-days).

I will be out-of-town from October 14-to-17 and will be out of e-mail contact until I return late Sunday night, October 17th.

Mission 4 will be a "10 day to complete" mission since it will be (1) a short mission, and (2) you'll have two weekends to finish it.  Expected mission time period is from Oct. 22 to 31.

26 September 2004

Second mission posted.

Deadline is Friday, 8 October at 1800 (Pacific); UK +8 (0200, 9 Oct), Denmark & Sweden +9 (0300, 9 Oct), & South Africa +10 (0400, 9 Oct).

Adopted 99th BG method of awarding official kills.

23 September 2004

All right, it's been a week since I posted mission 1 and of the starting 16, I've received 13 AARs! So we're doing very good in
that regard towards making our deadline.  And Bruce Peckham said eye surgery isn't going to stop him this weekend from completing his mission.

A special well done to the five members (out of 6 players) from the 316th & 317th that have reported in.  And I won't mention who the 6th player from the 317th is, but the rest of the 317th knows who he is.  :-)

We've picked up two new players & I expect them to finish their mission by Sunday.  So, I'm planning that mission 2 will be posted
late Sunday night (west coast time), Monday morning for our overseas friends.  I think a 12-day deadline should work for this next one for a deadline Friday night, October 8th.  Let me know if anyone has a problem with making this next one.

Mission-wise, the 88th is doing well.  Good results so far hitting the target, and we claimed 16 E/A with an equal number damaged.

Here's hoping that we can continue this great group.

16 September 2004

The CO made the decision to begin with 16 players with any additional players to be added while mission 1 is in progress.

First Deadline is Sunday, 26 September at 1800 (Pacific).

15 September 2004

Paul Sommer has set up the group's Yahoo message board.

September 2004 - Greetings and welcome to the 88th Bomb Group B-17 game site.

THE PLANS FOR THE REST OF THE YEAR

Currently, the squadrons are being filled and with the hope we will be playing soon after the first 3 squadrons are manned and operational.

Since this was intended to be a 'sister' group to Scott Settlemire's 99th Bomb Group game, we will be flying to the targets covered in their missions 2-to-6 as well, with only changes to the escort, flak, lead plane, Tail-End Charlie, and the flight log gazetteer.  Why not mission 1 to Nis too, you may ask?  In Scott's 99th alternate-history game, their mission#1 flew on 3 December 1943.  In terms of our alternate-history, the 88th Bomb Group did not arrive at Foggia until 1 December, not enough time IMO to move in and get ready for operations. Why?  Mostly it was my choice.  I researched the 15th AF missions for December 1943, and historically it wasn't until mid-December when the 5th Bomb Wing really started to fly.  During the first 2 weeks of December the squadrons were still coming in from Tunisia.

From missions 7 and onward, if the 99th game is still on hold, the 88th BG game will carry on without them and we'll let them catch up to us, that is, if they want to fly the same missions as we did.

For the first 5 missions, my goal is to have an aggressive turn-around time, say 10-to-14 days, and have at least 5 missions under our belt by New Years.  The reason are twofold.  First, one of the things I noticed in previous campaigns, nothing kills the players' initial enthusiasm like having to wait a long time to do the next mission.  Second, I hope by having a faster schedule it will sort out the serious players from the semi-mildly-interested ones.  It's the slower, wait to the last-minute to submit the AAR is what slows down the campaign.  And if everyone likes this faster pace, I'll consider keeping it.  Hopefully, during this sorting out period, we'll be left with the truly hardcore and dedicated players.  And I'm not planning on waiting for any late AARs when the due date arrives.  I'm planning to post the next mission the next day, so get those AARs as soon as you can.  I only hope that we aren't left with 4 players by then (and you know who I mean).

How will I do this?  I've got our first 7 missions already 90% planned out & prepared.  The only thing that's critical to update after a mission has been closed out is the Group formation chart.  The new changes to the individual players' pages and group stats can be prepared and posted while the next mission is in progress.  As the campaign progresses, I'll have 2-to-3 missions pre-planned.   In previous campaigns, the Group COs would wait until everything was completed before posting the next mission (at least, that is how I saw the way they did things).

So, here's hoping for all that we'll have some fun once this is finally off the ground!
